A Glasshouse of Stars by Shirley Marr
The author uses personification to give the main character’s house human qualities in this award-winning book. We’ll read an excerpt and then create our own ‘living’ house stories.
Forever Young by Bob Dylan
Not just a book – but also a wonderful song by Bob Dylan – a singer songwriter who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. We’ll listen to some of the song, and read the picture book adapted from its lyrics. A song is much like a poem, can you use a simple melody to write your own song?
The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry
In this book a group of animals try to persuade men from cutting down the oldest tree in the jungle, each giving their own opinion about the importance of the tree. Opinion writing is a valuable skill that we’ll practice today.
Playing Beatie Bow by Ruth Park
We’ll take a thrilling time-slip adventure from modern time to Sydney in the 1800s, then set about writing our own time-slip stories.
Stop the Presses!
It’s time to put on your reporter’s cap and sniff out a story. You’ll be given a (fictional) police report, witness statements and get to interview a suspect. Michelle will draw on her long career in journalism to share the basics of writing a news report.
Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
A scruffy stray dog is at the centre of this powerful story of friendship and community. We’ll discover how one dog brings meaning and kindness to a group of strangers. What can one animal do for its humans in your story?
A Most Magical Girl by Karen Foxlee
The evil Mr Angel and his terrifying dark magic extracting machine are raising an army of shadowlings, and they want to put an end to good magic for ever. After reading an excerpt we’ll use imagery to create our own magical written worlds.
