Castaway Island
We’re off on an adventure to Castaway Island as we talk about story settings. Choose a number and Michelle will tell you which awful island you’re headed to – will it be filled with snipping crabs, prehistoric dinosaurs….or worse???
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! By Mo Willems
The pigeon is desperate in this hilarious picture book. He begs and pleads to be allowed to do what he wants, but we won’t let him! It’s a great example of a persuasive text and now it’s our turn to use our skills of written persuasion.
The Evil Trunchbull
Good stories need great villains. Mrs Trunchbull, the hideous headmaster in the book Matilda by Roald Dahl is a great example of a fantastic villain. We’ll read Dahl’s description of Trunchbull and create fabulous villains of our own.
Will I Am – What I Am
We’ll watch a video of the singer Will I Am singing his children’s song What !Am song with the Sesame Street characters. The Wordsmiths will write their own song about who they are.
The Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
We’ll read the book Alexander and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst. Can you imagine a day where every single little tiny thing goes wrong? We’ll use our imaginations to come up with some disastrous days.
Five Senses of Writing
It’s easy to add great description to stories when we use the five senses, we’ll talk and write about how a fire and a beach smell, look, taste, feel and sound, to practice descriptive writing.
Turning animals into humans….sort of!
The Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss is a fun, engaging picture book that is also an ideal starting point for talking about anthropomorphism. We’ll use the book as the inspiration to write stories with animals as the main characters.
Beware the Storybook Wolves by Lauren Child
In this funny book a little boy is dragged in to the story of Little Red Riding Hood and has to find a way to escape. What story will you get stuck in – and how will you get out?
Lucky Dip Stories
Choose your own Lucky Dip bag containing a silly setting, crazy character and preposterous problem. You might get a Zombie Fish stranded on Mars, a Talking Cookie or maybe a Singing Bullfrog. Your challenge is to turn these crazy ideas in to stupendous stories – can you do it?
